Food
Just as we pay close attention to our diet, so we must care for our animals. Making sure your pet is well-nourished but not overweight is important. Each species has different dietary requirments. Dogs are biologically omnivorous and are able to balance their nutritional intake. Birds and small domestics also require small nutritional requirments. the BLUFFTON-WELLS COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER established new standards for pet nutrition, and is encouraging pet food manufacturers to raise standards to recieve endorsement by the BLUFFTON-WELLS COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER.
Some veterinarians believe that all natural and no preservative diet for animals is preferable. If you wish to try your companion animal on an alternative diet, consult first with your veterinarian.
Shelter and Space
Here are a few suggestions for pet care:
- Dogs and cats need a soft bed to sleep upon.
- Many small domestics need a shelter box and nesting materials.
- Birds need a variety of natural perches, space to spread their wings and fly.
- Animals need exercise. Fence in your yard so that they can run around and get some exercise. Just make sure your pet can not escape and that that he/she is well protected.
- Animals need natural light and a view. If you have a small domestic or bird, place the cage in a quiet room with lots of natural light. You may want to put a cushion on the windowsill for you cat.
Communication and Playing with your pet
Just because your pet doesn't say "What are you up to? Reading the paper?", doesn't mean they are not communicating. Pets communicate all the time. They tell us when they're hungry and when they want to play. Communicating is as important to your companion as it is to you. Imagine you wandered around the house and no one spoke to you! Here are some creative communication ideas for your pets:
- Talk to your pets.
Call them by name, when it's time to eat and when your giving them your greatest attention.
- Play music.
Not too loud though.
- Use toys.
Nothing will excite your dog more than to chase a dog or frisbee. Cats enjoy chasing toy balls and tearing apart a newspaper.
Small domestics like interesting and varied environments. They love affection and attention.
